Cryopreservation (vitrification) embryos and oocytes

Cryopreservation is an effective way to halt the biological processes in cells under exposure to cold temperatures, while saving vital activity of cells after thawing.

Any biological object may be cryopreserved. In Academician V.I. Gryshchenko Clinic for Reproductive Medicine cryopreservation of embryos, oocytes and оsperm samples (testicular tissue) is carried out.

Cryopreservation of embryos

In the IVF procedure, the best possible option is transfer into the uterine cavity of not more than two embryos. The rest of good quality embryos at the request of the patients may be cryopreserved for future use, in follow-up attempts at IVF (in case of negative result of the current attempt or after a few years, if the couple wants to have children more). For this purpose, cryopreservation of embryos is carried out.

Embryos can be preserved at different stages:

  • Fertilized eggs (zygotes)
  • Embryos at the stage of division
  • Blastocysts

There are 2 ways of embryos preservation – slow freezing and vitrification. In both cases, the embryo is then placed in the cryoprotectant solution, which prevents the embryo from the negative impact of low temperatures.

After thawing the embryos almost indistinguishable from embryos before vitrification. They are successfully implanted and developed as well. All embryos during the thawing procedure are exposed to the assisted hatching procedure. In this procedure, the embryo membrane is transected with laser beam at a certain angle, safe for the embryo. All this manipulation is aimed at facilitating the exit of the embryo from the membrane and increases the chance of successful implantation.

Cryopreservation allows storing the embryos for quite a long time. It is economically advantageous because the cost of storage, thawing and transfer of the embryo into the uterine cavity is much lower than the repeat of the IVF procedure.

Vitrification of oocytes

In Academician V.I. Gryshchenko Clinic for Reproductive Medicine, for cryopreservation of eggs (oocytes) vitrification is used, because at the moment this method is the most effective. It is vitrification, as method of freezing oocytes that completely eliminates formation of ice crystals and minimizes damage to the oocytes.

Oocyte vitrification allows extending the reproductive age of a female. By 40 years, the reproductive potential gradually reduces. Making cryopreservation of her oocytes at a younger age, the female may postpone pregnancy for a desired term, and also to protect the unborn child from genetic abnormalities caused by aging of its parents.

If the female is interested in retention of her reproductive function, vitrification of oocytes is reasonable in the following cases:

  • prior to chemotherapy for some cancerous deseases
  • at endometriosis – because this disease has chronicity and is accompanied by a decrease in the number of follicles in the ovaries
  • to increase the chance of pregnancy in females with low follicular ovarian reserve
  • in cases of emergency if failed to obtain sperm cells on the day of the puncture at IVF
  • prior to operational treatment for some gynecological diseases

In the cycle “vitrification-thawing” the Clinic manages to save up to 80% of the viable oocytes. In doing so, the frequency of the onset of pregnancy after fertilization of the vitrificated oocytes is approaching to the standard values for the onset of pregnancy after IVF.
